Dead in the water

Pouring dark grey highway runoff into a tube

Stormwater Shepherds UK feature in the report on ENDS report TV entitled ‘DEAD IN THE WATER: The chemical cocktails killing our rivers – and the emerging threats to be aware of’.

Jo Bradley was pleased to be asked to take part in filming as part of a new END Report TV item about urban pollution of British rivers. Jo spent half a day out with the film crew in Warrington, looking at motorway outfalls affecting tributaries of the River Mersey. Although the River Mersey has improved incredibly over the past 30 years, it still isn’t as clean as it should be, and one of the remaining sources of pollution that needs to be addressed is the pollution from the roads across the catchment. The River comes all the way down from Manchester to Liverpool, and is criss-crossed by trunk roads and motorways all the way, all of which discharge pollution into the river every time it rains.

In the discussion panel that follows the film, the Rivers Trust, United Utilities and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology had an excellent discussion about water pollution and the remaining topics of concern. If you can spare 40 minutes, make yourself a brew and watch the film. We think that you will find it very interesting.
