Presentation to Highways UK

I delivered a presentation to Highways UK this year, describing the extent of pollution from road runoff and showcasing some of the possible solutions. I emphasised the need for good design and specification and raised concerns about the lack of clarity on some design criteria such as treatment flow rate and maintenance intervals. Without these details at the design-stage, it is impossible to design an effective treatment scheme that will properly protect the environment. I also alerted the audience to the problems of poor and inadequate maintenance; so many treatment devices around the UK are left with no maintenance for years, which means that they stop working and the pollution persists. Stormwater Shepherds UK is grateful for the opportunity to present at events like Highways UK. It allows us to reach a new audience and to teach them about the extent of pollution from urban surfaces. Hopefully, by creating a network of friends and colleagues from these industries, we can start to affect change and to see the installation of more & better treatment solutions to reduce pollution.
